changing faces

almost a month since i last wrote. I've been busy mostly with school work but also with some interesting lectures on Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Middle East Colonialism, readings on wahhabism, sunni and shia religious tradition, shi'i communities in lebanon, iraq and iran.

i've been thinking about individuality and the external other, all leading to some kind of thesis about the presence of religious convictions informing political identity.

entries on some of the lectures to come thru inshaAllah. for now it'll be a train of thought.

  • president-elect obama
  • re-thinking sayyid qutb
  • Ed Husain and his book, The Islamist
  • the unfortunate case of Tarek Mehenna and how the tendency to quickly judge is a very hard habit to break off
  • The site of Jesus' baptism, bethany beyond the jordan
  • Religious tradition and its bad legacy
  • tropic thunder and the love of makin riches
  • "with my mind on my money and money on my mind"

You're not supposed to be so blind with patriotism that you can't face reality. Wrong is wrong, no matter who does it or who says it. -Malcolm X

The Prophet said, "Religion is very easy and whoever overburdens himself in his religion will not be able to continue in that way. So you should not be extremists, but try to be near to perfection and receive the good tidings that you will be rewarded; and gain strength by worshipping in the mornings, the nights."
